My Life Story
By George Johann Wolfhardt

From the Duhren Soulbook

I, Schoolmaster Georg Johann Wolfhardt, at present minister to the nobleVenningen estate, wa s born into this world at Nurtingen, in the highlycommendable principality of Wurttemberg o n 15 December 1601, a littlebefore six o'clock in the morning.

My much loved late father was the venerable and well-learnedSchoolmaster, Alexander Wolfhardt , born in the little town of Waiblingen, who for 48 years was a truly zealous teacher and mini ster--four yearspastor at Strumpffelbach not far from Schorndorff, 26 years at Nurtingen,14 y ears advisor to the principality of Wurttemberg and Abbot at theAlpirsbach Monastery in the B lack Forest, dying there in his 73rd year;and the Almighty God, on the day of rejoicing wil l awaken him with allwho believe, to eternal everlasting heavenly joy.

My well-beloved mother was the esteemed and virtuous EleanoraWolffhartin, nee Renzin, legitim ate daughter of the venerable andwell-learned Heinrich Renz, who for 33 years was advisor t o theprincipality of Wurttemberg and Abbot at St. Georgen Monastery in theBlack Forest.

My grandmother was the highly virtuous Frau Maria Renzinn, neeGraettersin, daughter of the ve ry esteemed and highly educated HerrUlrich (Kasper) Graeter. For many years Herr Ulrich and C hristophHertzogen were court ministers to his highness the Prince of Wurttemberg.

Through God's grace, I was born to my worthy Christian parents. Since nohuman birth in this w orld, however pure it is, can bring one toSalvation, I was forthwith presented for Holy Bapti sm in the names oftheir highnesses, the Prince and Frau Ursula Herzogen of Wurttemberg;sinc e at the time Her Grace was unwell, I was held at Holy Baptism by thevery noble young woman E lisabetha von Karpffen, at that time a courtmaiden to their highnesses, and also by the honor able and most respectedHerr Balthasar Muttschelin, at that time in the service to their grace sas overseer at Nurtingen. In Holy Baptism, the name Georg Hans was givento me because Her Hi ghness' late father, the Palatine count ofLautterreckh, as well as her brother, who was stayi ng then in Nurtingen, was so named.

From childhood I was kept in school by my aforesaid Christian parents. AtAlpirsbach, my belov ed late father had a private school for us children.I was sent to Nurtingen in 1612, to Canst att in 1614, to the elementaryschool; and then, in 1616, to the high school at Tubingen; tha t same yearI received a scholarship. In 1619, I graduated. In 1621, I became aschoomaster; th at same year I began to study Theology. In 1625, I went tothe Kraichgau and accepted a teachi ng position with Junker George Philippvon Venningen of Euchtersheim as a tutor to his son, Fr iedrich Rheinhart,to inform him in manners and studies. In 1626, I was promoted to theEuchter sheim Parish and on St. Andrew's Day was presented to theChristian Community, and ordained i n the presence of the Reverend andwell-learned Herr M. Johann Schweitzers, pastor at Michelfe ld, M. LazariZieglers, pastor at Neydenstein, and M. Martini Zimmerman, pastor atDuehren. An d after I performed the pastoral duties there for seven and ahalf years, I was transferred b y Junker von Venningen in 1636, toNeydenstein, and from there in 1637 to Duehren. Through th e long, ruinous, highly troublesome war (Thirty Years War), since no pastor athand in the enti re neighborhood, except the pastor at Ravensberg, JohanWolffgang Rabus, my true, highly trust ed brother in Christ (who died in1662 at Sultzfeld), I was sometimes at Steinberg, and someti mes atSinsheim, in which places I held services; following those villages, Iwas to Neydenstei n, Dassbach, Eschelbronn, Euchtersheim, Eschelbach,Darmbach, Hofen, Michelfeld, Steinsberg an d Ittlingen. Many Sundays I hadto travel four or five hours to bring the services to them. Fo r manymeals I had to partake of a good drink of water because no drop of winecould be brough t to the villages. It happened several times that of allpriests and Bavarian Clergy who hear d confession, I alone remained in thevicinity, and with the consent of the mayor and the hono rable advisors, Ihad to baptize several children at Sinsheim.

Since through the Almighty God, the God of Peace, Christ Jesus, our dearFatherland, after man y tribulations at great cost, enjoyed peace, and thevillages in the area again were restore d and grew stronger, I took myleave little by little of one parish and another.

First, I bid farewell to the parishes of Neydenstein, Eschelbronn, andDassbach on the 8th Sun day of Trinity, 1650. Since I had overseen theparish at Neydenstein 17 years, at Eschelbron n 16 years, and Dassbach tenyears, I gave up these three parishes, not without great sorrow , pain andanguish, to the Reverend and well-learned Herr Petro Ursino of Speyr.

I released the Hofen parish after I had likewise overseen the same parishfrom Steinsberg, Sin sheim, and Duehren for 13 years, and I entrusted itto the Reverend and well-learned Herr M. J ohan Christophors Widen, minister at Helmstadt, my true and constant friend until his death.

I left Michelfeld on September 15, 1654 and I entrusted the parish to theReverend and well-ed ucated Herr Adolpho Roselio. Also in the same year Ileft the parish of Euchtersheim and turne d it over to Herr Roselio onOctober 22.

From 1650, with the consent of the ruling family, I also looked after theAngeloch Parish fro m Duehren, until Jubilate Sunday, 1658, when thecommunity had become strengthened and shoul d have its own minister whowould also oversee the school. I took my leave and in my place a p astorwas ordained and the Reverend and well-educated Herr Michael Troje waspresented to the c ommunity.

Since the religious services at Eschelbach stopped after the death ofHerr M. Johan Caroli, th e Monk of Hirschorn forbade all religiousservices from 1636 until 1647. But finally, after hu mbly and imploringlybeseeching the ruling family many times, through God's grace the churchag ain reopened and public religious services were again permitted; and Iwas requested by the ne ighboring community to preach for the first timethe fourth Sunday after Trinity in 1647. Th e Almighty God will stillmoreover preserve this same Christian Community by his rich Word an d HolySacrements until the coming of the Last Judgement. Amen.

As the religious services were forbidden at Eschelbach by the Monk ofHirschorn after the deat h of Herr Carolus, in 1636, I was requested bythe then Mayor of Darmbach, Dietrich Kaltman, i n the name of thatcommunity, I was sometimes gone from my house in Neidenstein three orfour w eeks at a time.

Concerning my married state:

After I was promoted to the Euchtersheim parish by my very graciousJunker von Venningen, I en tered into Holy Matimony, according to God'sordinance, and first I was married to the honorab le and virtuous younglady, Anna Allgaierin, legitimate daughter of the late and Honorable and respected Hans Allgaier, citizen of Entweihingen on 11 February 1627, andlived in blessed mat rimony for ten years, five months, and one day, withher through God's blessing begat six chil dren.

After the death of my beloved wife, I was married again, to the honorableand virtuous young l ady, Anna Burckhartin from Kochendorff, legitimatedaughter of the esteemed late Veit Burckhar dt and Margaretha, her belovedmother. The marriage was held at Ravensberg 22 February 1638, a nd wasperformed by Johann Wolffgang Rabus, pastor there. And through God'sblessing with thi s my beloved wife, I have had six children.
